Price is always a determining factor as this exercise equipment can become quite expensive if you are on a tight budget. Checking with a few mid-range stores may not be a bad idea if they can offer equipment that is comparable to the higher priced ones.
Other points you may need to consider
Stride length – some offer a 14 inch stride length which may be too short for an average sized person. As such, you may need to invest in a 21 inch stride length machine.
Consider an adjustable incline. Although this isn’t necessary, adjusting the ramps on your machine will make for a more intense workout.
Check the equipment for pedals that move smoothly and quietly when checking the machine out before purchase.
Although you do not need the arm handles, consider them too, as they will intensify the workout.
Before you buy anything, visit several different stores, wear your workout clothes, and test the equipment for a minimum of 10 minutes. Test different models, and examine the bike in its entirety, checking the pedals too. Make sure that the motion is smooth, not jerky; and that the handrails are conveniently located.
Inquire about a warranty; whether there is a 5 year, 10 year or lifetime. And lastly, measure space in your home where you would like the equipment to be placed. It’s no good if you have a great machine and not enough space to effectively use it.
